In the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, leather-working was well-established and Homer, the legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems that are the central works of ancient Greek literature wrote about the methods people used to dry and decrease ox-hide in his famous Iliad. Leather was so popular in Roman times that the Roman army were sent to battle assembled out in it.
